Lípa lies in the Zlín District on the left bank of the River Dřevnice, and its first written record dates from 1261. From 1976 to 1990, Lípa was part of Zlín, then called Gottwaldov, and it has been an independent municipality again since November 1990. Railway line 331 runs through the municipality, and the station has borne the name Lípa nad Dřevnicí since December 2004.

The municipal office has been based in a renovated former school building since 1994. The kindergarten is housed in a historic former school building dating from 1892, while older children attend primary school in a neighbouring municipality. The municipal Sokol hall reopened after renovation in 2016 and has a function room for cultural and social events, as well as a café.
